The subprime mortgage crisis of 2008 began with a collapse of many financial institutions, and trickled down to affect working class families across the United States. Homeowners defaulted on mortgages, banks seized properties and families struggled to stay in their homes.
Many simply walked away from the foreclosed properties, leaving signs of happier times in their departure. These photos are from two shoots for The New York Times.
